Alumni Portrait – Maxence Calvez
After graduating from the MBA in International Hotel Management program in 2024, Maxence Calvez joined Corporate Management Training in the Finance Department (C.M.T) of the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile.

What made you want to join Hyatt’s Management Corporate Training program?
First of all, the high-quality courses at Vatel Bordeaux, particularly those given by Jean-Étienne Palard, made me discover and love finance.
Then, during the summer of 2023, I worked on a fixed-term contract as a chef de rang at the Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée. I really liked the atmosphere within the group, and I discovered Corporate Management Training. I joined this program, which enables a hotel group to train and develop young graduates in its philosophy within a specific department over a period of 12 to 18 months.
Convinced by the high quality of the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile department, I applied and took up my post in October 2024.

What do you enjoy most in your day-to-day work?
I particularly like the fact that I get to work in a very versatile way and that there is no routine.
First of all, the great versatility comes from discovering in depth the components of the financial world:
- The bursar’s office is the hub of a hotel and helps set up events.
- Supplier accounting provides a very factual way of managing orders, prices, etc.
- Auditing and accounts receivable will be the next steps in my program.
Secondly, the absence of routine is a reality because we are trusted enormously. The teams integrate us into their projects with enthusiasm.

What would you say to students who are hesitating about joining the finance industry?
From a personal point of view, joining the finance sector opens you up to a wide range of careers. It gives you access to
- Highly sought-after universal skills such as an analytical mind, the ability to find solutions, etc.
- More accessible promotion opportunities: for example, you are a maître d’hôtel, and you want to take up a new position as manager in your restaurant. Your training in finance will have made you aware of the key issue of reducing and optimising costs.
From a collective point of view, your cost-cutting work will benefit all the departments in your company.

In short, the finance department is not a brake on initiatives, but an essential partner in turning them into reality. As the saying goes: ‘An objective without a plan is just a wish’. Thanks to rigorous management, Finance gives ideas the means to become concrete successes.
